What makes a clinic a dedicated dry eye clinic?

Almost any optometry practice can tell you your eyes look dry and sell you a bottle of drops. A dedicated dry eye clinic is a different thing, and the difference is measurable: it has equipment that shows what is happening on your eye surface, and it offers treatments that act on the cause rather than lubricating over it.

On the diagnostic side, these are the things worth asking about before you book:

  • Meibography. Imaging of the meibomian (oil) glands inside your eyelids, so the clinician can see how many glands are intact, shortened or already lost. It is the one test that shows the tissue itself rather than a number describing it, and a routine eye test almost never includes it.
  • Tear break-up time and a slit-lamp workup. How long your tear film stays stable between blinks, plus a close examination of the lid margins, the gland openings and the quality of the oil that can be expressed from them. This is what separates a lid-driven problem from a surface one.
  • Tear osmolarity. How concentrated your tears are, which tends to rise as the film destabilises. Not every clinic runs it, and it is one measure among several rather than a verdict on its own.
  • Tear volume. Tear meniscus height or a Schirmer's strip, which is how aqueous-deficient dry eye is told apart from the far more common evaporative form.
  • A standardised symptom questionnaire. A score at the start means change can be measured later instead of guessed at.

On the treatment side, a dedicated clinic can do more than write a prescription. In-clinic options commonly include intense pulsed light (IPL), thermal pulsation, and meibomian gland expression for blocked oil glands; punctal plugs to conserve the tears you make; structured blepharitis and lid care; and, at the more difficult end, scleral lenses or autologous serum drops. Prescription anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating drops sit alongside these and are a clinician's decision after an examination.

Two practical signals matter as much as the equipment list. The first is appointment length: a real dry eye assessment takes time, and clinics that run them tend to book longer appointments and say so up front. The second is whether the clinic reassesses before recommending a course of treatment, and talks about managing dry eye rather than curing it. Results vary between people, and a clinic that says so is being accurate, not pessimistic.

What a listing in this directory does and doesn't mean

This directory is independent. We don't sell rankings, and clinics can't pay to appear higher in search results or in the list above. Where a clinic has opted into a paid listing tier, that placement is clearly labelled as featured, so you always know what you are looking at.

Before a listing goes live we check the practice's AHPRA registration and confirm the treatment menu submitted to us against the clinic's own published details. The directory is still in beta, so that verification is manual and we contact clinics directly when something needs clarifying. We would rather show an empty state for a city than fill it with a listing we can't stand behind, which is why several city pages here say plainly that nothing is listed yet.

Equally, a listing is not an endorsement, a quality ranking or a clinical recommendation. It means the practice is registered, that it offers the treatments shown, and that it is somewhere you can start. It does not mean it is the right clinic for your eyes, and it does not mean the clinics missing from this page are worse: the directory is young, and plenty of good practices simply aren't in it yet. If you know one that belongs here, tell us, and clinics can list themselves directly.

How to use this directory

There are four ways in, depending on what you already know.

  • Search or filter above by postcode, suburb, clinic name or treatment. If your dry eye is evaporative and you have been told IPL might suit you, filtering by treatment is the fastest route to a shortlist.
  • Browse by state. Each state page lists every clinic we hold for that state, or an honest empty state where we hold none.
  • Read the city guides. Our dry eye clinics by city pages cover what the local climate and indoor air do to your tear film, what treatment tends to cost locally, whether you need a referral, and which listed clinics are actually within reach.
  • Start with your symptoms. If you aren't sure your problem is dry eye at all, our dry eye self-test gives you a score to take to an appointment, which is far more useful than describing your eyes as "a bit dry".

So which is the best dry eye clinic in Australia?

We don't answer that, and any directory that does is either guessing or selling. Australian advertising rules for regulated health services exist precisely to stop that kind of claim, and beyond the rules, "best" isn't a property a clinic has in the abstract. It depends on what is driving your dry eye, what treatment that calls for, and how far you can reasonably travel.

What we can do is hand you the criteria and let you judge. A clinic worth your money images your glands, measures your tear film, explains which subtype you have before recommending anything, offers the treatment that subtype needs, gives you a total cost up front, and builds a review into the plan. A clinic to be wary of glances at your eyes, hands you a bottle, and sells a package before it has measured anything.

This page is general information, not medical advice. Clinic listings aren't endorsements, and no clinic pays for a higher ranking. See a qualified clinician to find out what is right for you.
